In need a of a quiet place to sit, relax, think, explore or get inspired? Look no further than the Jackson M. Abbott Wetland Refuge in Alexandria, VA at Ft. Belvoir. The beautiful wetland is home to a variety of of native birds, ducks, turtles, deer, and so much more. Every time you stroll around the pond, you will discover something new, and will leave with a smile. It is so peaceful and charming.
My family walks by the wetland daily, and occasionally we venture in to explore it. It is a truly a charming place to go see the turtles sunbathing, the ducks diving off the branches over and over. The lullabies the frogs sing in harmony with the dragonflies.
My daughter loves to run/ walk to the wetland to clear her mind when she needs to write an essay. She also gets inspiring ideas for art projects, paintings, jewelry making, and photos for postcards. Every season has a story to tell. In autumn, the bright orange and yellow leaves dance in the crisps air and the cooler temperatures just beckon you to stay a little longer. The sun playing peek-a-boo through the slightly bare trees is a delight to take in.
Young and old, big or small, all can enjoy an walk, run, or a bike ride around the wetland’s grounds. My three dogs could not get enough of the hike around the Jackson M. Abbott Wetland Refuge. They were so curious about the turtles sunning on the branches then splashing into the nice, cold, refreshing water. We then saw some families biking around, and the tails started to wag again…more attention and possibly more snacks! Who can complaint! The woods are the trails offer a plethora of options to explore, dig, smell, and chase. It was so difficult to decide what to do, and so little time to do it. We must go back tomorrow for another fascinating walk!
